Perkins + Will

By Greenhealth Staff on March 19, 2012

A leader in the sustainable movement in health care, the firm pushes the limits of green design.

Sustainable, high-performance, and environmentally conscious design are staples of Perkins + Will’s global interdisciplinary design practice. These values are as important to the firm today as they were at its founding over 75 years ago.

Many of the firm’s projects are registered with the LEED rating system with over 125 LEED certified buildings including acute care hospitals, academic medical centers and ambulatory care facilities. Perkins + Will is a founding partner of the Green Guide for Health Care, was represented on the committee that developed the LEED for Healthcare rating system, and is the recipient of the Practice Greenhealth Changemaker award.

Perkins + Will launched the built environment’s first free, universally accessible database aimed at creating greater transparency into building materials containing substances that are publicly known or suspected to be associated with an adverse finding in relation to human and environmental health. The database can be accessed for free at Rather than use products that contain these substances, the firm seeks out alternatives, in an effort to be responsive to reported health effects and thereby to protect our health and the health of future generations.

Perkins + Will was recently awarded an expanded role in the design of a new 521,000- square-foot Leed Silver addition to the existing Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital on the Stanford University Medical Center campus. The new addition will include close to 200 new private acute and critical care patient beds, extensive new surgical and diagnostic services, a below grade parking structure for patients, as well as two new inviting multi-use outdoor garden spaces that serve to link the new hospital addition to the existing hospital, already known for its multiple use landscaped courtyard spaces.

Perkins + Will is responsible for the architectural and interior design for the new addition in order to expand upon the master plan developed by KPF, and is working closely with HGA Architects, the architect of record and medical planners. Perkins + Will is developing the approach towards the overall patient and family experience throughout the new building, as well as ensuring that the design incorporates as many environmentally responsible and energy efficient design solutions so as to help Lucile Packard achieve a LEED Silver rating.
