Commitment to Sustainability

By Greenhealth Staff on March 19, 2012

Practice Greenhealth’s architect and engineer members help move the health care industry toward environmentally conscious and sustainable practices. The following are just a sampling of award-winning and notable architecture, engineering, and landscape design firms dedicated to the greening of health care facilities around the country.

Boulder Associates Architects

Since our founding in 1983, Boulder Associates Architects has exclusively specialized in healthcare and senior living design. Our offices are located in California and Colorado, with a staff of 75 architects, interior designers, and other professionals. With a rich understanding of lean processes and sustainable design, we help our clients set new standards for healing environments. We are a committed Planetree Partner and four-time recipient of the Practice Greenhealth Champion for Change Award, granted to companies demonstrating a commitment to improving environmental performance both internally and externally.

One emerging practice in the healthcare industry is the integration of traditional medical services with fitness, rehabilitation, and wellness programs. We recently designed this type of project for Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Opening in July 2011, the new Peninsula Wellness Center is already a proven icon within the community, with fitness center memberships exceeding projections. Future building phases are expected to attract numerous primary care physicians and specialty groups that will better serve the region’s varying medical needs. This holistic approach to “preventative care” rather than “curative care” will be seen as a valuable, proactive healthcare resource and will reconstruct the way healthcare is viewed by both patients and medical professionals

Erdman is committed to responsible environmental stewardship. We take great pride in helping clients identify their sustainability business goals and pursue measures that mitigate their environmental footprint. Throughout the engagement, we share perspectives on the opportunities surrounding sustainability in healthcare facilities. The goal is to identify issues and strategies that can be leveraged to enhance organizational excellence related to patient care, staff well-being and satisfaction, and stewardship within the community. All of these factors promote the desired experience of sustainable healthcare delivery. Our focus is on the triple-bottom-line benefits of social, environmental and economic well-being.

Our ability to integrate sustainability throughout the continuum of healthcare facilities provides a unique platform to impact all healthcare stakeholders from the patient to the community. At Erdman, we access many of the industry’s benchmarking tools: LEED Version 3.0, Green Guide for Health Care (GGHC), and Energy Star Portfolio Manager. We continuously invest in our culture imbuing sustainability awareness into every employee and expanding our expertise. Sustainability informs our company as we partner with our healthcare clients in their journey from concept to care. Along with Practice Greenhealth, we have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

HDR Architecture, Inc.

As a top-ranked healthcare design firm worldwide, we are especially committed to helping elevate sustainable design strategies for healthcare environments. The healthcare industry is committed to doing no harm, and yet possesses many issues related to the design and operation of its facilities that are contradictory to this principle tenet.  At HDR, we strive to support those efforts that will help healthcare systems transform their facilities into models of environmental stewardship. We are proud of our sponsorship of Practice Greenhealth’s “Greening the OR” initiative and our role as a founding endorser of the HPD (Health Product Declaration) Open Standard, a standard format for reporting product content and associated health information of building products.

All projects we design and engineer—from hospitals and laboratories to government buildings and commercial office buildings—are required to set goals for energy use reduction, water use reduction, and indoor environmental quality. Additionally, all projects utilize a sustainable design checklist and a sustainable QA/QC process to ensure goals are addressed during the design process.

HDR currently has more than 780 LEED Accredited Professionals and has completed over 39.7 million square feet of sustainable project work.
